Products description

The coin treasure of Gailertsreuth - A coin treasure from the first half of the 15th century in the Upper Palatinate

In July 2022, hobby historian Steffen Oberst from Weiherhammer discovered a coin hoard during an inspection with a metal probe on a family-owned piece of woodland, which greatly enriches the find landscape of the Upper Palatinate of the first half of the 15th century, especially that of the region close to the border. This is the coin find from Gailertsreuth, a district of the market town of Floß in the district of Neustadt a.d.WN. The coin hoard is one of the largest, or perhaps the largest coin find from the 15th century that has ever been found in the Upper Palatinate.

The majority of the 2,518 coins in the find are pennies of the Regensburg and Würzburg strikes from the last two decades of the 14th century and the issues after the Franconian mint unifications from 1395/96. The other part of the find consists of denominations larger than pennies. These are dominated by Prague and, to a lesser extent, Meissen groschen. These are accompanied by half groschen in the "Frankish" style. With a total of 32 coin denominations represented, the chronological depth of the find extends to around 200 years.

The coin treasure was cleaned and restored by the finder, Steffen Oberst, and then processed by Helmut Friedl from Pfreimd. The results can be found in this publication with a report on the find and a fully illustrated catalog. In a separate article, Tilman Mittelstraß discusses the two coin hoard vessels in detail.
